How do squirrels remember where they hid their acorns?

They probably leave their scent, as many other animals do, combined with a good topographic memory.

Physic Intuition ;)How do squirrels remember where they hid their acorns?
Yes.
they smell them
just cause your not so bright doesn't mean that our fuzzzy friends aren't. they do it by cent or location landmarks.
Science doesn't yet have that answer.
They don't. That's why they run around digging all summer. They hide them and then find them based on smell. Only they can't smell well enough to find the exact spot, so they dig all around until they hit the jack pot.
They draw little squirrel maps with Xs for the spots where the nuts are buried. Some squirrels have tiny little GPS systems for the times they forget where the maps are.
I am sure trees are to them like buildings are to us. We can discern which is which and where we are. They remember, use landmarks, use special areas.
They don't expect to find them later! They are just practicing good planting guidelines (planting trees for their little grand babies.

Actually Dr Quest hinted at the right idea. It has to do with magnetic fields, Like with Homing pidgeons. They feel the earth's magnetic fields. It is also how pets can find their way home from hundreds of miles away
they put the nuts and acorns in their marked territory
How do you remember where you parked your car?
they don't thats why they are always on my deck getting peanuts from me.
Echolocation.
maybe by scent i had a pet squirrel once
i have no idea, maybe by scent?
